GATEWAYS TO THE ISLAND

This walk connects the two gateways to the island – Gois Passage and Noirmoutier Bridge – and displays remarkable maritime scenery: the polder and Bourgneuf Bay to the east, and the dunes and the Atlantic to the west.

FROM GOIS TO FORESTS

Start out from the Barbâtre Tourist Information Office. After riding along the agricultural plains, you will discover the preserved site of the Sébastopol Polder, a listed regional nature reserve. By the Gois Passage, you’ll be ready for a break to catch your breath. Next, you’ll cross the four-lane road to head towards the pine forest, the dunes and the town of Barbâtre. You will then follow the path along the edges of the Tresson Dunes, before crossing over at the Bonhomme roundabout. As the tide goes out, Bonhomme Port sets the stage for its traditional ballet of tractors going to the oyster farms for the working tide. There, you can sample some oysters in an oyster hut before returning to your starting point.

FROM MARSHES TO MILLS

Set off to meet the island’s salt makers and oyster farmers on a tour flavoured by the salty sea. Ride along the salterns to the Bonhomme oyster port. You can even stop to sample some oysters. When you’re done, head towards the Both Mill along the seashore. Next, pass through the charming streets of L’Épine at the edges of the Bois des Eloux wood and continue on to Morin Port.
